Vintage Red Wing Pottery stoneware mixing bowl, made in Minnesota in the 1920s or 30s. Size number 7, as impressed on base. This is the only marking on the bowl which indicates the age. Early Spongeware bowls did not have any writing or stamp on the bottom. Red Wing reproduced the bowl in the 60s and 70s, adding a blue.

This blue & rust pattern laid over buttery coloured clay is most commonly referred to as Spongeware, but also as Saffron Ware or Spatterware. This particular pattern is often sought by collectors due to its two-colour design and iconic shape. Could make a lovely planter for succulents.

Condition:
This is an excellent example of nearly 100 year old Americana stoneware. It is in very good condition given its age. It does have one small chip on the outside of the bottom edge - see photos for details.

Measurements:
11.5cm tall x 18.5cm diameter = approx 4.75 x 7

Red Wing Potteries Inc. was founded in Red Wing, Minnesota, in 1861 by German immigrant John Paul. The name had changed several times until 1936 when the name Red Wing Potteries, Inc. was finally decided upon. The name was changed again in 1967 to Red Wing Pottery.
