A very nice genuine vintage ‘RD Universal’ wall can opener manufactured in Wednesfield, Staffordshire, England by Rudman, Darlington & Co. Ltd. and dating from the 1960s. The opener still comes with its original box, instructions, wall mounting plate and screws. This product was selected in 1963.
A very nice genuine vintage ‘RD Universal’ wall can opener manufactured in Wednesfield, Staffordshire, England by Rudman, Darlington & Co. Ltd. and dating from the 1960s. The opener still comes with its original box, instructions, wall mounting plate and screws. This product was selected in 1963 for inclusion in the Council of Industrial Design (COID) Index. The Design Index was a list of products selected by the Council which represented the best of British design. As a result, it was displayed in the prestigious 'Design Centre', London. This robust opener his a blue painted steel body with chrome plated trim. It still retains the original maker’s and 'Design Centre' labels. Length (not including handle): 161mm (approx. 6.33 inches). In rare mint and unused condition. Sir Gordon Russell, who was heavily involved in the 1951 Festival of Britain, examined ways to reform the education and training of new industrial designers. The Design Centre, in London's Haymarket, was officially opened on 26 April 1956.
